Painful Nails

If the edges of a nail are uncomfortable – it could be an ingrown toenail but if there is no corner or ‘spike’ of nail penetrating the skin then it is commonly an involuted nail that’s the problem.

From experience, I’ve found that around 1 in 20 people suffer from this, with varying degrees of discomfort.

The side of the nail sits very deeply in the nail fold. Very often, the edge is also curved slightly, causing more pressure on the underlying skin.

It can be caused by a number of things:

  • Your family! Often people in the same family have an inherited wide nail plate and shape
  • Trauma to the nail causing the shape to change
  • Pressure from footwear. If the toe end of your shoe is too narrow or too shallow, this causes ongoing pressure to the nail edges.

This is the kind of thing you need to leave to a professional Podiatrist - Chiropodist to treat.
