Athletes Foot
Where the skin has become infected with a fungus, this is known as Athletes Foot.
Fungal spores exist everywhere, so it’s really hard to avoid them completely. If your skin is intact and healthy, it will keep the spores from entering your cells.
However, if there are tiny cracks in the skin or it’s soggy then this allows the spores to infect the skin. This happens after things like swimming or being sweaty from doing exercise in trainers. The skin - usually between the toes - becomes red, flakey, appears like broken blisters and is INTENSELY itchy!
It’s quite straightforward to treat, by the application of an anti-fungal cream twice a day and by keeping the feet clean and dry, particularly between the toes.
The cream should do the trick in around a week – but keep applying for another week just to make sure all the spores are destroyed.
Anti-fungal sprays and powders are also available from chemists or supermarkets – these are great for treating the insides of your shoes to prevent re-infection.
