Skin can become dry and thickened for several reasons.

Medical conditions such as psoriasis and diabetes can affect the skin generally, and hard skin builds up as a response to additional pressure on certain parts of the feet.

Any deformity of the feet, caused by physical injury or by conditions such as rheumatoid arthritis, will also make certain areas of the feet more prone to extra pressure.

Footwear can also be responsible – a good Podiatrist – Chiropodist can offer you footwear advice.

Slight to moderate hard skin can be managed by gentle filing (when the skin is dry) and regular application of a moisturising cream.

I use sterile disposable scalpels to reduce the hard skin to make walking much more comfortable.

Where appropriate, felt padding can also be applied to effectively reduce the pressure on problematic areas.
