Fungal nail infections are very difficult to treat.

It’s become increasingly common; so much so, that I see it in about 9 out of 10 of my patients to some degree.

Initially, the nail plate will appear to have white patches in it. At the other end of the spectrum, badly diseased nails become thickened, crumbly and a dark brown/yellow colour.

At this stage, the nail bed is infected and it’s virtually impossible to treat. Filing the nails can, however at least keep them comfortable.

Fungal nail infections aren’t painful and do no harm, although can be unsightly.  The topical paints and creams you can buy have minimal effect as they are not penetrating right down to the nail bed, and they also need to be applied for at least a year.
